Noble Friends,

On this day in 1500 was born Reginald Pole, son of Margaret Pole, Countess
of Salisbury, and distant relative of Edward IV and Richard III. The Poles
had been Yorkist supporters of Richard III, had intrigued against Henry
VII, and had their own claim to the throne.

Reginald and other members of the Pole family opposed Henry VIII's divorce
and marriage to Anne Boleyn. In exile on the Continent and now a Cardinal,
Reginald became involved in the Pilgrimage of Grace and in various
diplomatic efforts by the Pope to block Henry. The King did not take this
lightly, but Reginald was out of reach, but most of Pole family still in
England were arrested and executed.

Reginald was able to return to England during the reign of Bloody Mary in
1554. In 1556 he was appointed as the last Catholic Archbishop of
Canterbury. Archbishop Pole died of influenza on 17 November 1558 just a
few hours after Mary's death.

Archbishop Pole's story is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Pole .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
