Noble Friends,

Today the BBC has announced that the restoration has begun on Rembrandt's
most famous painting, "Militia Company of District 2 Under the Command of
Captain Frans Banninck Cocq" (aka "The Night Watch") at the Rijksmuseum,
Amsterdam: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48905867 .

The Rijksmuseum has an extensive web site on the painting, its history, and
the restoration project, including a video which so far shows building the
glass box (at high speed) in which the work will be conducted:
https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/nightwatch .

Wikipedia also has in excellent summary of the painting's history at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Watch .

And don't forget the flash mob version by real costumed re-enactors in a
shopping mall (including the girl with the chicken), "Onze Helden Zijn
Terug!" ("Our Heroes Return"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6W2ZMpsxhg (you
might want to let this run several times to get a sharp version if you have
a slow connection) ? The film on the making the flash mob is at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxPhRsl57dM .

Yes, I know it isn't quite in our period, but who can resist this
magnificent painting and all the other fun?

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
