Noble Friends,

Katharina von Bora (or Catherine von Bora) is believed to have been born on
this date in 1499. There is no surviving documentation for her birth. As an
adult, she would marry Martin Luther in 1525:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharina_von_Bora .

Katharina was sent to a Benedictine convent in 1504 for her education.
Later she was moved to a Cistercian house where her aunt was a nun. At some
point Katharina formally entered the religious life, however she became
attracted to the Protestant Reformation. She contacted Luther for help, and
Katharina and several other like-minded nuns were smuggled out of the
convent in a wagon bearing barrels of fish (apparently not inside the
barrels, as is sometimes depicted in popular culture).

After her marriage to Luther, Katharina bore six children, and was foster
mother to several orphans. She apparently had a backbone, Luther had great
respect for her (though he apparently didn't think much of women in power).
She is credited with influencing Luther's teaching on marriage and family
life.

Katharina is considered a saint in the American Lutheran church.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
