Noble Friends,

I almost missed this one. Today is the feast day of Saint Dwynwen, a Welsh
woman who is honored as the patroness of love. In Wales, at least.

According to her legend, Dwynwen was an Irish princess, one of 36 children
of a king named Brychan. She wanted to marry a Welshman named Maelon
Dyfodrul. Her father forbade the romance, and Maelon tactlessly said he
would rape Dwynwen if he didn't get her legally. Bad move, as he showed his
true colors. Dwynwen turned against him and prayed that God would freeze
his passion. God did, but turning Maelon into a block of ice. End of that
relationship.

Dwynwen decided never to marry, and wanted to help lovers in pain. She
became a nun at a church on Angelsey, where she dispensed marital advice to
the lovelorn based on the movements of fish in her holy well.

More about Dwynwen can be found at

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
