Noble Friends,

On this date in 1120, the White Ship capsized on a submerged rock off the
coast of Normandy while sailing for England. The overcrowded ship carried
some 300 passengers, many Anglo-Norman nobles. Among the dead was William
Adelin, the only legitimate son and heir of King Henry I. His death was
later to plunge England into 18 years of civil war for the throne between
supporters of Henry's daughter Matilda and those of Stephen of Blois.

The conflict, generally known as "The Anarchy", forms the background of
Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mystery series.

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
