Noble Friends,

Today the BBC is reporting that "Robin Hood's Grave" near Kirklees Park may
soon be bulldozed as part of a redevelopment scheme. This has roused locals
to float a petition to save the grave site from destruction:

So here's the problem: The grave is apparently a 17th or 18th century
folly, and the Robin Hood connection is poo-pooed by most historians. Add
to that, in the television program EXPEDITION UNKNOWN host Josh Gates
participated in a ground-penetrating radar scan of the grave. The scans
showed the ground below is undisturbed. In short, nobody is buried in the
plot. Well, when have facts ever been allowed to get in the way of "truth",
or at least a good story that purports to be "truth"?

Parts of the EXPEDITION UNKNOWN episode can be viewed at
https://www.travelchannel.com/shows/expedition-unknown/episodes/the-real-robin-hood
. The section about the grave site is missing, but there are several other
rather entertaining video clips from the program (be aware that the
"teaser" still photos don't match the actual footage). The entire episode,
including Josh Gates in period costume, can be downloaded on YouTube for a
modest fee. It is one of the most enjoyable in the whole four-year series.

If you are interested in the Robin Hood legend, and it is a complicated
one, you can enjoy a summary at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
