Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,

On this date in 1559 John Knox returned from Geneva to Edinburgh, and
became one of the leaders of the Protestant reformation of Scotland.

While in exile, Knox wrote the famous tract, "The First Blast of the
Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women". He railed against women
rulers, aiming his screed at Mary I of England, Scottish dowager queen Mary
of Guise, and Mary Queen of Scots. Elizabeth of England, crowned after the
pamphlet was published, took personal offense at Knox's views and banned
him from ever entering England.

Knox was a true firebrand preacher, and through his influence the Scottish
reformation became one of the most severe Protestant movements, resulting
in an almost thorough elimination of the Catholic church in that domain.
His brand of Calvinism became the official Scottish church, known as the
Kirk of Scotland (still in business). Through later Scottish immigrants to
North America, his teachings became the foundation of the Presbyterian
faith in the US.
