Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,
On this date in 1546, the Scottish Protestant preacher George Wishart was
martyred. He had been arrested on the orders of Cardinal David Beaton, and
was given a show trial before being hanged and his body burnt as a heretic.

Cardinal Beaton was assassinated on 29 May 1546, partly in revenge for
Wishart's death. He was attacked in his quarters at St. Andrews Castle,
murdered in the approved Scottish fashion with many dagger thrusts, and the
Cardinal's mutilated body was hung outside his own window for all to see.
