Noble Friends,
Earlier this week I posted about the re-enacted funeral of Aethelflaed,
Lady of the Mercians. I should have figured there would be more to that
story, and so today I can point to two more features about her life.
So as it turns out, today is the anniversary of her death in 918, 1,100
years ago. Wikipedia is featuring a biography of this remarkable warrior
queen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Æthelflæd . And quite a life she had!
In addition, the BBC is offering a follow-up to their earlier piece which
discusses Aethelflaed's life and why she was nearly forgotten by (pig male)
historians or grudgingly passed off as "as good as a man":
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-44069889 .
It has taken a long time, but Aethelflaed is finally getting the
recognition she so richly deserves.
Yours Aye,
Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
