Noble Friends, Especially Vikings,

Today one of the featured Wikipedia stories concerns the Lokrume Viking
Helmet Fragment, an eyepiece discovered in 1901 on the Swedish island of
Gotland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokrume_helmet_fragment .

I was surprised to learn that the Lokrume fragment is part of only a
handful of surviving Viking helmets or fragments. The Gjermundbu Helmet
displayed in Oslo is the most complete: https://en.
wikipedia.org/wiki/Gjermundbu_helmet . Of course none of these helmets have
horns attached. Horney helmets are a 19th century Wagnerian invention, but
you knew that, didn't you?

There actually was a horned Celtic helmet, the Waterloo Helmet, recovered
from the Thames in the 19th century, but that isn't Viking:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo_Helmet .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
