On this date in 1271 the Hospitaler castle later known as Krak des
Chevaliers fell to the Mumluks after a 36-day siege. The garrison were
apparently tricked into surrendering by a ruse. Krak des Chevaliers was one
of the greatest and most famous Crusader castles:
