Noble Friends,

On this date in 1487, the last true battle in the Wars of the Roses took
place on Stoke Field near Nottingham. Forces loyal to King Henry VII
crushed Yorkist rebels under John de la Pole. The battle itself was
tragic, but something of a ho-hum. What is more interesting about Stoke
Field is the presence of the pretender Lambert Simnel.

Simnel was about 10-years old and had been groomed to impersonate
Edward, Earl of Warwick. That the real Warwick was safely under
lock-and-key in the Tower of London, and according to most historical
accounts was not of sound mind, did not matter to the rebels. Simnel was
taken captive after the battle. Henry VII believed the boy had been
used. The King pardoned Simnel and gave him a job in his kitchens (no
doubt under careful watch). Eventually Simnel became a Royal Falconer.
