Noble Friends,

On this date in 1587, English settlers landed in what is now North
Carolina in their second attempt to establish the Roanoke Colony. The
second party included 115 men and women, with the later addition of
Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World. The
English were not able to send a ship back until 1590 because of the war
with Spain. The relief expedition found the colony deserted, and no firm
evidence of what became of the colonists has ever been found:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony . It would be another 17
years before the English again established a colony in the New World,
this time at Jamestown in Virginia, but that is beyond our period of
interest (except for their cool artifacts, which are often a
continuation of the Elizabethan period).

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
