Noble Friends,

Recent DNA tests on a skeleton found during excavations at a medieval
hospital in Hampshire, England, have revealed that the person suffered
from leprosy. In addition, he was found buried with a scallop shell,
indicating a possible pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The
researchers are now suggesting that besides through the crusades,
leprosy might have entered western Europe via pilgrimage routes. You can
read the story here: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38748911 .

The supposition is possible, and leprosy was known in western Europe
even before the crusades. That said, a single case does not prove the
theory. A very interesting possibility, though.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, The Laird of Mallard Lodge
