Noble Friends, Especially our Brewers:

On this date in 1516, the best known version of the Bavarian 
Reinheitsgebot, or beer purity order, was made a law. The order limited 
the ingredients that could be used in beer to water, barley and hops. 
The law was intended to prevent price competition and shortages for 
wheat and rye between the brewers and the bakers. The net effect was to 
make pilsner-style beers the only brews legal in Bavaria, and later 
across the unified German state:
