Noble Friends,

On this date in 1431, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen by
her English captors. During much of the Hundred Years War, the French
had their backs to the wall, hindered by weak kings, self-serving dukes,
internal divisions, general military inefficiency, and an well-justified
fear of the English longbow. More than any other factor, the inspiration
provided by Joan of Arc began to turn the war against the English in
1429. No wonder the English wanted her dead. She was captured by the
English-allied Burgundians at the siege of Compiègne in May 1430, and
turned over to the English. Joan was tried for heresy, chiefly on the
charge that she wore men's clothing. The trial was a stage-managed
kangaroo court and conviction was a foregone conclusion.

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
