Noble Friends,

On this day in 1499, 13 year-old Catherine of Aragon was married by 
proxy to Arthur, Prince of Wales:

actually meet until 4 November 1501, and she was a widow when Arthur 
died on 2 April 1502. Rather than return Catherine's dowery, the very 
parsimonious King Henry VII arranged for her to marry his second son, 
Henry VIII, and as they say, the rest is history.
