Noble Friends,

On this date in 1527, unpaid and mutinous troops from the army of the
Holy Roman Emperor Charles V attacked and sacked Rome. The city was
lightly defended and the walls were quickly breached. During an attack
on the Vatican, 147 Swiss guards sacrificed themselves to allow Pope
Clement VII to escape to Castel Sant'Angelo. The city remained occupied
by the mutineers until early 1528, when food ran out and the plague
appeared: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Rome_(1527) .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
