On this date in 1337 Edward of Woodstock, oldest son of Edward III of 
England, was created the first Duke of Cornwall. Edward of Woodstock was 
the first duke ever created in England:

Edward of Woodstock is known to history as the Black Prince, supposedly 
because of his heraldic device of three feathers on a field of black, 
because his armor was blackened, or because of his brutality. The 
by-name does not appear until long after his death, and the origin is 
quite murky.

The Black Prince was also the Prince of Wales and would have been king 
(probably as Edward IV) had he not died before his father. He was also 
the first Knight of the Garter.
