Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots:

On this day in 1566, the secretary to Mary Queen of Scots, David Rizzio,
was murdered by her jealous husband, Lord Darnley, and a pack of
Protestant nobles. We've posted about this event before, but today I
would like to call to your attention a brief Wikipedia biography which
focuses on the unfortunate (or deserving, as the case might be) Rizzio
himself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rizzio .

It is most curious that one of the causes of the murder was the
suspicion that Rizzio was the Queen's lover and that her only child,
later James VI of Scotland and James I of England, was suspected of
being a bastard. This didn't stop the Scots (or the English) from
accepting him as king. James was raised a staunch Protestant. Had he
been brought up a Catholic, both the Scots and the English might have
rejected him and history would be quite different (for example,
Jamestown would have been called something else).

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
