On this date in 1586, Sir Francis Drake and his English fleet attacked 
the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine in what is today Florida. After 
taking two outlying forts, the English seized the actual town (from 
which the Spanish had fled) and burned it to the ground. Needless to 
say, the Spanish King was not amused, but this was hardly surprising. A 
state of war already existed between the two countries, and ships for 
the famous Spanish Armada and the invasion of England were already under
