On this day in 1540, Thomas Cromwell was beheaded on tower hill for 
treason on the orders of Henry VIII. His downfall is generally 
attributed to arranging the disastrous marriage between Henry and Anne 
of Cleves. Immediately after Cromwell's topping, Henry married Catherine
