Today's featured picture on Wikipedia is titled "Portrait of an African 
Man", painted circa 1520-1530 by Jan Mostaert. It is thought by many 
historians to be a portrait of Christophle le More, and is the earliest 
known depiction of a specific black individual in European art. Nothing 
is ever that simple though. Other experts claim it is a generic image of 
St. Maurice or other black figures from the Bible or among the Catholic 
saints. In any case, it was likely painted from life, and is a striking 
depiction of a proud individual:
