Noble Friends,

On this date in 1582 Pope Gregory XIII issued the papal bull 'Inter
gravissimas' which established the Gregorian Calendar that most of the
world now uses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_24 . The old
Julian Calendar had not been very accurate, and had gotten several days
out of whack. This caused difficulties in setting the correct date for
the all-important Easter observances. The Gregorian Calendar corrected
this problem, but at the expense of a number of days that simply didn't
exist that year. Gregory's calendar introduced us to leap years, the
extra day (now 29 February) being the chief feature for keeping the
calendar in line with the actual orbit around the sun.

Ever wonder why the Vatican has its own observatory? It's all about
Easter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vatican_Observatory .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
