Noble Friends,

On this date in 1327, the 15-year old Edward III was crowned King of
England. Edward was one of England's greatest military monarchs, though
that is not a happy thing to contemplate if you were French or Scottish.
His personal reign did not begin until 1330 when he arrested and
executed his guardian and step-father, Roger Mortimer, who planned take
the throne for himself. After slaughtering the Scots in two significant
battles, Edward began the Hundred Years Wars with France in 1337 to
enforce a rather dodgy claim to the throne via descent from John of
Gaunt (yes, it's complicated, and the House of Valois had a solid claim
under Salic law). It was Edward III who perfected the use of longbow
archers in English armies, particularly at the Battle of Crecy.

You can learn more about this remarkable man at

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
