Noble Friends,

On this day in 1384, English theologian and all-around religious gadfly
John Wycliffe died of a stroke:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wycliffe . Wycliffe was educated at
Merton College, Oxford, and was associated with Oxford University until
expelled in 1381. He became a prolific writer and critic of the Papacy,
church privilege, and the monastic system. Wycliffe taught that the
scriptures were the only reliable source of religious authority. He
translated parts of the New Testament into English, which the church
considered to be an act of heresy. In 1428 on the orders of Pope Martin
V, Wycliffe's body was exhumed and burned. The ashes were thrown into a
convenient nearby river.

Wycliffe is generally associated with the Lollardy, a religious and
political reform movement in England:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lollardy .

Though not considered a saint, Wycliffe is honored by some branches the
current Anglican and Episcopal churches every 31 December.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
