Noble Friends,

One of the featured articles on today's Wikipedia site is a summary of
the Saint George and the Dragon statue. The sculpture is attributed to
Bernt Notke, and was dedicated in 1489. The original statue is in the
Storkyrkan in Stockholm. A bronze copy, also in Stockholm, is outdoors
in the Köpmantorget. Another copy is in St. Catherine's Church in
Lübeck. For photos and story:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George_and_the_Dragon_(Notke) .

The original sculpture was a commemoration of the Swedish victory over
the Danes at the Battle of Battle of Brunkenberg in 1471. It was
commissioned by Sten Sture the Elder, who led the victorious army, and
for a time he was buried beneath the statue. For more on the battle see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brunkeberg .

Notke was considered one of the finest artists in Northern Europe. He
was head of a workshop that produced tapestries, altarpieces and other
large works for churches throughout the Baltic region. A number of his
finest works survive. Examples can be seen at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernt_Notke .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
