On this day in 1542 the ill-starred Mary Stuart (aka Mary, Queen of 
Scots) was born at Linlithgow Palace. Mary was perhaps the worst (or 
more charitably the least successful) of Scotland's Stuart rulers. She 
entered into two disastrous marriages which turned many of her subjects 
against her. A staunch Catholic, Mary was opposed by most Protestant 
Scottish lords, and was eventually forced to flee to England. Mary 
refused to renounce her claim to the English throne or recognize 
Elizabeth as legitimate. Her plotting against Elizabeth eventually led 
to Mary's execution.
