3 September 301 is the traditional founding date for the Republic of San 
Marino, which claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state in the 
world, and the world's smallest republic:

San Marino is also home to the San Marino Federation of Crossbowmen, a 
quasi-military organization which performs demonstrations and 
competitions with that weapon. Sadly, their excellent web site was 
dismantled a few years ago, but here are some interesting photos from
