Noble Friends,

On this day in 1536, Anne Boleyn was placed on trial for adultry, incest
and treason by Henry VIII: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Boleyn .
With a hand-picked jury, the outcome of the trial was a foregone
conclusion. She was beheaded on 19 May on the Tower Green, and is buried
in the Church of St Peter ad Vincula within the Tower of London.

Poor Anne, beautiful, clever, and power hungry, was cast into an arena
where failure meant death. She was pitted against Thomas Cromwell and
other powerful men, and in a way against her monstrous husband Henry
himself, who were willing to bring her down for their own purposes. Her
fate is sad, but she dragged down a number of good men who were her
accused accomplices, but were very likely completely innocent. While it
is fiction, and really applies to Jane Seymour, there is a telling scene
in the SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII when Jane is terrified at a masque ball
by Cromwell and the other men who had just destroyed Anne. The court
must have been a really scary place.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, A Scot Whose People Just Daggered One Another
