Noble Friends,

Curiosity led me to a Wikipedia search for information about the
Gilbertine Order of Canons Regular, the only all-English monastic order
ever founded. The order was begun by Gilbert of Sempringham, a
Lincolnshire parish priest, circa 1130. Initially an order for nuns, it
included men to serve as priests (canons), lay brothers to work the
estates, and lay women to serve the nuns:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbertine_Order . The Gilbertines were
never a large or very wealth order. They were disbanded during the
dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII.

The main surviving monument to the Gilbertines is Malton Priory Church,
which incorporates part of a Gilbertine house into its fabric:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malton_Priory .

Gilbert was canonized in 1202:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_of_Sempringham . He was buried at
Sempringham Priory, which became a minor pilgrimage destination.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
