Noble Friends,
On this day in 1381, rebels in what is known as the Peasants' Revolt
captured the Tower of London and there beheaded the hated Chancellor the
Archbishop of Canterbury Simon Sudbury, along with the Treasurer Robert
Hales and others. The next day the Young King Richard II had his famous
confrontation with the rebel leader Wat Tyler at Smithfield, during
which Tyler was killed and the King famously rode toward the rebels
shouting "I will be your leader." This was one of the few things this
very unsuccessful king did right. The Peasants' Revolt was one of the
largest popular uprisings in English history, and nearly brought down
the government.
You can read about the Peasants' Revolt and its causes at:

Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
