Noble Friends,

On this day in 1346, Edward III of England won a decisive battle against 
a much larger French force at the Battle of Crecy. This battle was noted 
for the use of an archery-heavy army fighting on foot, rather than 
relying chiefly upon heavily armored knights on horseback:

proven these tactics against my fellow Scots, and the use of massive 
archery barrages were to be the key tactic of the English for the next 
200 or so years.
