Noble Friends,

On this date in 1587, Virginia Dare was born to Eleanor and Ananias Dare
at the Roanoke Colony in what is now North Carolina. Virginia was the
first child of English parents born in the New World. Her grandfather
and governor of the colony, John White, sailed to England for supplies.
His trip back to Roanoke was delayed because of the 1588 war with Spain.
When White arrived back at the colony, also on this date in 1590,
Roanoke was deserted. No trace of Virginia or the other colonists was
ever found: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Dare .

The article mentions some of the many commercial products named in honor
of Virginia Dare. Among these was a line of wines, oddly produced in
Cucamonga, California. Like the Roanoke Colony, the winery was abandoned
and fell into ruin many years ago. I saw it in the early 1970s when I
was just beginning my career as an under-aged wine connoisseur and
college lush. The building is now restored and houses a ritzy restaurant.

Here is more on John White:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_White_(colonist_and_artist) , and an
article on the Roanoke Colony itself:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
