Almost all the original members of the Garter were tour eying buddies
of Edward III. He knew them during the days when he was making the
Tourney circuit in France and the Low Countries. They "we're of a mind"
in all things martial and became his trusted companions and captains
when he went to war with France (HYW).
Friends and tested stalwarts on the battlefield.[1]

   Noble Friends,
23 April 1344 is the traditional date for the founding of the Order of
the Garter, England's most prestigious order of chilalry. The Order was
   the creation of Edward III:
   [2]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Garter
The Order of the Garter was the inspiration for several other orders,
notably the Ordre de l'Étoile (Order of the Star) founded by the French
King John II in direct opposition to the Order of the Garter during the
   Hunderd Years War:
   [3]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Star_(France) . This order
   is
   defunct.
The Ordre de la Toison d'Or (Order of the Golden Fleece) was founded by
Phillip the Good, Duke of Burgundy when he had to refuse nomination to
the Order of the Garter. To have accepted would have been treason
   against the King of France:
   [4]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Golden_Fleece . The Order
   of
the Golden Fleece continues in business today by descent through the
Habsburgs. The head is now the King of Spain, Felipe VI.
   Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
