Noble Friends,
The BBC had two new pieces on Richard III today.
The first is a fantastic painting of Richard's fatal charge at Bosworth: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-24991819 . The painting shows the moment the King lost his crown while skewering the Lancastrian standard bearer. The royal central figure is surrounded by the chaos of battle as men struggle in mortal combat. Yes, the bows in the lower left are all wrong (they are reflexed Victorian confections), and almost everyone seems to have their visors wide open, but it is a stirring image. The canvas was finished in 1839 by William Bass and is owned by the Talbot family, but will be on show in Leicester until 2015.
Also of interest is the attached story on the reconstruction of the gardens and grounds around Leicester Cathedral in preparation for the adjacent King Richard III Visitor Centre: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-24991468 . Although the tomb plans are on hold, work is going ahead with this part of the project despite the pending legal challenge to the King's burial in Leicester. And a visitors' center? Long ago I said this whole flap was about tourist dollars!
There's still more to come!
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, The Archer of Mallard Lodge
