Preparing for the Persona Pentathlon often takes people out of their “comfort zone.” But this doesn’t mean that you have to completely conquer a new art form in order to enter! Let me give you a few examples:
*When I lived in Ansteorra, some of the Laurels decided to challenge each other to try a new art form. So we placed one of our areas of expertise in a hat (literally) and drew something new to try. Now, I don’t cook. Ever. Really. So you know what I drew out? You guessed it—Roman cooking. The challenger helped me with some sources (today I would just go to http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/) and off I went into uncharted territories. I read the research, found a little cake I thought I could conquer, and didn’t burn down the house making it. I also found pictures of Roman feasts, and added a period floral arrangement, etc. The experience didn’t make me a cook (my apron says, “Sooo not a cooking Laurel.”) but I learned something and had a good time. I bet you could do the same for your time period.
* For the same event, I challenged someone to learn about 13th century Spanish clothing. I helped with sources, she did her homework, and then it was time to create. She didn’t want to make an outfit she would never wear again, so she documented and created a lovely ensemble for an American Girl Doll. An elegant solution, I thought.
You don’t have to conquer the world for the Persona Pentathlon. Just conquer a small portion! (Dibs on Barcelona, y’all.)
