[MR] BBC: Richard III's "Untidy" Grave

I wouldn't be surprised if he only received the bare bones version of a catholic burial (no mass involved), like a pauper would have. The absolute worst thing they could have done (in a temporal sense) was give the new ruler any reason to suspect their loyalty.

And with no casket for the body, they sure wouldn't have wanted him laying out in the choir after several days of being exposed to the public. Smelly! Get that corpse into hallowed ground! A prayer or two and they'd been good to go.

Noble Friends,

This brief BBC story discusses Richard III's "untidy" grave: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-22647770 . His burial was rather hasty, perhaps because the monks wanted it over quickly for fear of reprisals by the Lancastrians. I can't believe he didn't at least have a mass.

I'm sure the York partisans will be smarting at the disrespect with which the very late king was treated in Leicester (even if it was over 500 years ago), and will be claiming the "untidy" grave is one more reason he should be reburied in their city.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, The Archer of Mallard Lodge
