One thing to keep in mind when thinking about things like this is that the
SCA, unlike other reenactment groups has an intentionally low bar to entry.
We don't have particularly strict standards of authenticity or periodicity
precisely because we want to welcome people to our hobby and get them
interested. Compiling a perfectly period kit right away is difficult for a
variety of reasons - monetary, skill-based and knowledge. The cost of our
choice to encourage people to give it a try even if they can't get it right
"out of the gate" is that people will see modern gear and imperfect
reproductions at events. I like it that way, I think the cost is worth it,
but yeah, a reporter could point out the inconsistencies if they just want
something to criticize. Besides, I am a dork, so what?
Also, yes, when the Onion makes fun of us, it is funny.
