Noble Friends, especially fellow Scots,
Today the BBC is offering a brief feature on Scottish mercenaries and their role in continental wars. Part of the story concerns a mass grave from a 1520 battle in Sweden, which may contain the remains of many Scots. The story references other wars in the 16th and 17th centuries in which the Scots played a major part, including the Hundred Years War when Scots fought in large numbers beside the French. (Why not? Besides beautiful women, great wine, and a pleasant climate, we Scots enjoyed few things more than knocking English heads together, especially when we were paid for it.)
