Lord Mungo, hail and well-met!
In my persona as a late 13th century
Scottish huntsman and hound varlet, I serve John "The Black Comyn",
father to John "The Red Comyn" who was foully murdered by the Bruce and
his followers at Dumfries. As history is writted by the victor, the
Bruces did much to vilify the name of my lord's family, and worked
actively to nearly exterminate them and their allies. As you have
alluded, almost all the great Scottish lords of that time, including the
Bruces, played footsie with the Sassenach at one time or the other as
they maneuvered for power and prestige.
There are two very good books that delineate the complex power struggles
between the Comyns and the Bruces, each with a claim to the Scottish
crown after the death of the Fair Maid of Norway:
"In the Footsteps of Robert Bruce in Scotland, Northern England, and
Ireland" by Alan Young and Michae J. Stead (The History Press, Stroud,
Gloucstershire, 2010) and "Robert the Bruce's Rivals; the Comyns
1212-1314" (Tuckwell Press, East Linton, 1997).
YIS,
Swannoc Beag
