Noble Friends,
Sunday was the 946th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, which as you
all know brought Norman rule to Anglo-Saxon England. The battle was
commemorated this weekend by celebrations and reenactments on Saturday.
Unfortunately, heavy rains and mud forced the cancellation of Sunday's
restaging of the battle:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-19940824 . There are a few
cool pictures of men at arms here for you to contemplate. You can
refight the battle electronically at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/normans/launch_gms_battle_hastings.shtml
.
As for history itself, Wikipedia has a very good summary of the battle:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hastings . An article covering
the broader conquest of England is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Conquest .
Another Wikipedia article covers the history of the Bayeau Tapestry and
includes detailed blow-ups of some of the key scenes at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry . You can see the entire
tapestry in once piece at:
http://www.hs-augsburg.de/~harsch/Chronologia/Lspost11/Bayeux/bay_tama.html
. A number of interesting videos and other features are available at:
http://www.medievalists.net/2009/06/11/the-bayeux-tapestry/ .
And that should be enough to keep most of you busy until I find
something else to share!
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, Who Probably Did Not Have Ancestors at Hastings
