This was this weeks' episode of PBS's NOVA. If you can find it to watch I highly recommend it.  It's the story of unlocking the secrets of the Viking  sword with a great sidebar on Damascus steel. Turns out the steel is almost identical in both.
An Ulfberht sword is made from ingot to finish in the episode.
