Noble Friends,

Last week I posted a notice about UVA's Flowerdew Hundred exhibit, showing artifacts dating from the very early 17th century settlement of Virginia. My reason for posting this was that the material culture of the early Jamestown settlement and its outliers was little changed from Elizabethan times, and so is still of interest to Scadians. Today I took time to visit the exhibit in person. Although the physical exhibit is well represented in the online version, there are some items not shown on the web site (example: supporting documents, such as contemporary letters). The artifacts are much more impressive in person, and to a limited extent you can move around some of them and get a closer view than with the web versions. The text of the web site is nearly the same as the explanatory material in the actual room.

Once again, the web site for the exhibit is http://explore.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/show/layersofthepast . I'm still trying to determine the open hours for the building. It is usually open 9-5 weekdays, but I can't find any mention of weekends. There is no charge for this, and you can see everything in about ½ hour, or take an hour or two to read all the explanations. If you do visit the exhibit, please note that there is also a small permanent collection of more artifacts in a separate room to the left of the entrance that is not connected with the current show.

Yours Aye,
