Dear People -
Following the most welcome lead provided by Garth Groff at
UVA,, I've just spent several fascinating hours exploring the
Flowerdew Hundred virtual exhibit,
at <http://explore.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/show/layersofthepast>.
Thank you very much for providing this resource to those of
us who are interested in history, but are not in a position to
actively research it. The website is very fine, and I will be
recommending it to others. You make Mr. Jefferson proud of his University.
All that being said, I found one aspect of the site to be
far less than optimum. Perhaps, in the future, as resources become
available, you could remedy this.
Throughout the site, there are numerous illustrations. In
general, a user can click on the images, and be presented with an
enhanced version. The trouble I found is that, in all too many
cases, the "enhanced" version is not a bit better than the original
version -- indeed, I suspect that some are actually smaller! Would
it not be possible, without spending an prohibitive amount of money
or time, to ensure that clicking on an image would present a much
larger, more detailed, image? If so, it would be a blessing to the
community, and would also increase the likihood that online viewers
would be more likely to recognise artifacts whose purpose is so far
unknown to the academic community.
         Thank you.
