Noble friends,

This weekend the BBC featured a short piece about a Scottish "Cursing"
stone found on the Isle of Canna. This stone is a lozenge-shaped piece
marked with a simple cross. It was to be inserted into a depression in a
flat stone in front of a large stone cross, and turned several times was
prayers were offered. It is sort of like counting the Rosary, but
grittier. Gradually the "Cursing" stone and the flat stone with the
depression were ground until they fitted perfectly. And it was
discovered that the small "cursing" stone matched the depression before
the near-by cross. Now they have all three pieces back together again.
Why they should have called this a "cursing" stone is beyond me, but we
Scots are often inscrutable.
