Noble friends,

Just received at the UVA Fine Arts Library: SIGISMUNDUS REX ET
IMPERATOR, KUNST UND KULTUR ZUR ZEIT SIGISMUNDS VON LUXEMBURG, 1387-1437
[edited by] Imre Takács (ISBN 3805336268; our call # DD170 .S545 2006 /
Oversize). This massive exhibition catalog (733 pages!) tells the story
of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor (ruled 1411-1437) and his times. It is
lavishly illustrated, mostly in color, showing tapestries, prints,
engravings, sculptures, paintings, maps, heraldry, architecture, seals,
coins, armor, weapons, and everyday objects of the late 14th and early
15th century. For costumes alone, this book is priceless, and for those
of us who are usually exposed mostly to works about medieval England or
France, the Germanic styles are a refreshing change. The text is
entirely in German, but even if you can't read that language, examining
the illustrations will be a wonderful experience. The work is completed
by the usual bibliography and indexes.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
