Noble friends,
New at the UVA Fine Arts Library: TOURS 1500: CAPITALE DES ARTS (ISBN
9782757205150; our call number Fine Arts N6849 .T68 T68 2012). This book
is an catalogue for an exhibition presented at the Musée des Beaux-arts
de Tours, on show from 17 March to 17 June, 2012. It is a fantastic
collection of images from French Art circa 1500, almost 400 large pages
worth. The collection is mostly illuminations from books of hours, but
also includes architecture, sculpture, stained glass, tapestries and
portraits, nearly all in glorious color. The text is all in French, and
there is no English supplement or translation. While this does detract
somewhat from its usefulness (unless, of course, you happen to read
French), but the images are still worthy of careful study. This book is
particularly rich in costumes, from peasants and soldiers to kings and
high churchmen. As is usual with books of this type, there is a large
and scholarly bibliography, and in this case also an index, though only
of the artist's names. This would be a great book for Scadians to study.
You probably won't find this on Amazon (but then again you might), so
your best bet might be to request this by interlibrary loan from your
local branch.
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(aka Garth Groff, UVA Libraries, Cataloging & Metadata Services Dept.)
