We use a similar product (but sized as a spadone) in the montante
class in Lorton (not SCA, but lots of crossover). From an A&S point
of view, I am not really fond of them because they really don't feel
like a real sword to me; even our wooden wasters feel better. Still,
they can take a lot of punishment, which is a good thing.
For A&S in the SCA, though, I recommend wooden wasters or (even
better) rebated steel for partner practice. We've been using rebated
swords from http://armor.com, and I like the feel. I also have a
rapier from Darkwood, and I've been fairly happy with it, though
others can give you more info on what is out there than I can. I know
there are some complaints that the hilts are a bit overbuilt, and I've
heard some talk about
For SCA heavy combat, swords are still rattan. If you want to play
with metal swords, I suggest looking into cut and thrust--and others
can talk about that better than I can, as I am not yet authorized for
C&T. However, I find that there is something to actually having steel
in the hand that is appealing.
