Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,

This week BBC featured a story about the Battle of Largs (a little late for a celebration, since it took place on October 2 in 1263). This was a small battle between the army of King Haakon of Norway, and the Scots led by Alexander of Dundonald, Steward of Scotland. The Scottish kings had been asserting themselves in the Western Islands, lands long controlled by the Norse. The battle was a draw, but it forced Haakon to retreat to Orkney. He died before a new invasion could be launched the next year. This eventually gave Scotland control of these islands, though it took another 150 years to pacify the independent-minded Scottish/Irish/Norwegian clans.

Here's the BBC story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-20697117 . Cool pictures too!

Here's a Wikipedia page on the Lords of the Isles, who continued to be an irritant to the Scottish Crown until the rein of James IV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_of_the_Isles

Yours Aye,
